Salma Yaqoob became politically active after 911, and was elected leader and vice-chair of the Respect Party.
An active member of Birmingham City Council, she chaired the Birmingham Stop the War Coalition.
The
Guardian described her as "the most prominent Muslim woman in British
public life" in 2010, and she was recognized by the Equality and Human
Rights Commission in association with The Times and Emel.
She
was raised in Birmingham and played football on the streets
of Alum Rock. She studied biochemistry and psychology at Aston
