Simon Rattle is an English conductor who rose to international fame as
conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to
1998.
His achievements included a 20th century musical concert
series entitled "Towards the Millennium", and the move of the CBSO from
Birmingham Town Hall to Symphony Hall in 1991.
Rattle was
awarded a CBE in 1987 and made a Knight Bachelor in 1994. A
dedicated supportor of youth music, he earned the record for assembling
