Barbara Cartland

was born in Edgbaston in 1901.

She was one of the most prolific and commercially successful authors of the 20th century, selling over a billion copies.

Cartland wrote 723 novels which were translated into 36  languages, and made a Guinness World Record by publishing the most novels in a single year.

She specialised in 19th century Victorian-era romance novels that featured portrait style artwork.

Cartland also became a prominent society figure and one of Britain's most popular media personalities.
She was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 1991.
