The Spitfire is a single-seat fighter that was produced in greater numbers than any other
British aircraft.
Over half of all Spitfires were built in the Castle Bromwich
Aircraft Factory, which produced a maximum of 320 aircraft per month.
They were used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied
countries during and after World War II.
Featuring a semi-elliptical wing shape and Merlin engine, the aircraft
reached top speeds of over 600 mph.
The oldest surviving Spitfire is preserved at the Royal Air Force
Museum Cosford. |
