Joan Armatrading
was born in 1950, and grew up in the area of Handsworth.She began writing songs as a teenager, and taught herself to play a guitar that her mother bought for her at a local pawn shop.
Joan left school at 15 to support her family by working in an engineering tool manufacturer in Hockley, Birmingham.
Over her 40 year career she released 18 studio albums, as well as several compilation and live albums.
Joan was nominated for a Grammy Award three times and for a Brit Award as best female vocalist twice.
