Charlie Chaplin was born on the Black Patch in Smethwick near
Birmingham according to documents that Charlie's widow Oona bequeathed
to their daughter Victoria.
His
early life was one of hardship, with an absentee, alcoholic father
and a mother struggling financially and being committed to a mental
asylum. He developed his performing career as a teenager.
Chaplin rose to worldwide fame as an actor, comedian, and filmmaker in the silent era, and co-founded United Artists.
His screen persona "the Tramp" is considered one of the most significant in the history of film. Photo from Insomnia Cured Here.
